write it down.

{images via m. writes blog}

all my special friends received a mini-diary for christmas. a couple of them wanted to know where i got them, and i can’t believe i didn’t share this before! it took me awhile to find her again, but marta made these beautiful mini-diaries. they are so perfect! she runs out fast, however, so place your order quick!

i am always telling my students to write down the little details, and these diaries are perfect for that. it’s the little details that we forget too easily…

p.s. i just looked at her blog and will be regular reader from now on. she has amazing ideas for parties…

fave photographer.

i stumbled upon the website of tara whitney recently and am in love, love, love with her work. i want to someday be able to take pictures like her. she shoots a lot around orange county, where i was born and raised, so i love to see some of the places where i formed many memories.

{please, please, please look at this website. you must see the pictures! i did not want to copy without permission..does anyone know the dos and donts for posting photographers’ work?}

i am a newbie at photography, but i have to admit it is my current obsession. in my free time i am reading books, blogs, websites, anything about how to become familiar with my digital slr and how to manipulate its settings to get the pics i want. most of the pictures i post on my blog are straight out of automatic setting. in the interest of time i don’t mess with them when i put them up on the blog.

my most used model for experimenting and improving my picture taking is, of course, j, and that means that i can’t show my pics online since he’s not adopted yet. i flaked on my sp challenge after becoming discouraged by my skills, but will pick it up some time later. i can, however, see a slight improvement in my pictures, and it definitely helps to use the camera settings, rather than take pictures on automatic mode.

if you live in southern california, and she fits within your budget (sadly, she doesn’t fit into mine YET), you MUST book her to take pictures of your family. her work is beautiful.

her blog is here. and this home movie (something you can also have done by tara and her friend, michel) is something that you must see. it’s gorgeous.

no, don't call, because we LOVE to sit in traffic on the freeways of l.a.

we’d planned weekly visits with j’s birth mother (“bio-mom” sounds a little too much like “octo-mom” lately…and i’m not a fan, so i’ve stopped using that term). three weeks ago she called at about 10 a.m. to say she couldn’t make it, but that she DEFINITELY wanted to visit him the following week as it was the day before his birthday. she did make it last week, but then left after 30 minutes because she said she had a job interview. i specifically said see you next week to make sure that there would be a visit the following week. she said, definitely, i want to give him his birthday, as has become our routine every tuesday, we left work a bit early, woke j up from his nap at school, and drove the 30 or so minutes (which means WAY longer in l.a.) to the sw’s office for the visit. birth mother was a no-show, and didn’t bother to call this time. if j was older i really don’t know how we would’ve explained this to him. i wonder what foster parents of older children do in this situation… did she not have a gift and felt embarassed? is she working now? is she in school? has she moved yet again? so many questions unanswered.

we are going to assume that’s there is no visit next week unless she calls to confirm. may 14 is the big day, and we’ve received our written notification (as i’m sure birth mother has, too) that the social worker is recommending tpr and adoption by US.

this post title sounds snippety, which is what happens when you sit in l.a.’s traffic. but in some ways it seems that it brings us closer to being his forever family. whatever happens, i feel so, so blessed to have this little boy in my life. blessed beyond belief.

i'm seriously thinking of never giving my kid cotton candy.

a couple of months ago j was given some cotton candy. not wanting him to load up on ANY sugar, i stuck it away for, you know, when i might need it. i found it this weekend.

despite being in a sealed (i double-checked) plastic bag, it turned in to a mass of hard rock. seriously gross.

his party may not have been "two" cute, but he sure is.

you know…sometimes i get really bummed that i can’t post pictures of j. he’s not yet officially “ours”, so we can’t post pictures of his face. i feel like i’m depriving you all of such cuteness.

j’s party was last weekend, and although i didn’t take weeks to plan every detail, i am a list maker by nature, so, yes, there were many lists. and, as usual, many expectations on my part. blogging is great, but at times it has made me feel inadequate at best in many departments, including party planning. i see all the cakes, all the decorations, all the food and games, and i think, why can’t i do that?

ummm…because you have a full-time job? because you just collected 30 1-page essays and 75 5-8 page research projects? oh yeah, there’s that darn job getting in the way of my blogging habit again.

i had planned to set up the cake and cupcakes (i made both) all cute and stylized and everything with the decorations for pictures to post. the food would look scrumptious (despite being store-bought) and i would be happily relaxed to mingle with guests, as well as be able to record all festivities on camera.

yes, things were easy but…it was close to 100 degrees so cupcakes and cake nearly melted. they needed to be refrigerated so no one could see just how cute everything was. husband’s close family friend (who shall remain nameless) stuck his stinking dirty fingers in the  caesar salad in front of several of my friends to pick out cheese. don’t worry, he says, my hands are clean. really? because they never are. he proceeded to watch the long beach grand prix in the living room with his shoeless feet on the coffee table. classy, really classy. he is another post altogether.

i felt like a kid on christmas who expects a puppy and gets a box of christmas ornaments (true story from my childhood).

then i realized that this was really silly. the party wasn’t about me. everyone was fed, everyone had a good time, but, more importantly, j had the best time ever. he played on his jungle gym with his cousins and friends, opened up a whole lotta toys, helped break open his first pinata, and was sung “happy birthday” to. all my expectations really were met, and i didn’t even realize it at the time. he is a happy little boy, and this makes me happy.

next year i will remind myself to not feel pressured to make everything look just so.

and let’s not invite you-know-who.

p.s. here’s another cute circus party from mikodesign!
